CAFFE' DI SIMO In this coffee bar, that still has great part of its original furniture, took place, by the end of 1800, a “friendship circle”, as reminded by the memorial plate of 1958 placed by the owner Angelo Ricci and Fernando Pieri. This Caffè had among its famous guests Giovanni Pascoli, Giuseppe Giacosa, Alfredo Catalani, Giacomo Puccini, Pietro Mascagni, Libero Andreotti and Lorenzo Viani. Perfect host was the owner Alfredo Caselli, generous and cultured friend of great artists.
TORRE DEL LAGO OPERA FESTIVAL “Sunny beaches, cool pinewoods forest, the lake always calm: that is, Eden”.
The deep love between Puccini and this borough, 10 km. from Lucca, lasted for 30 years.
Puccini moved there by the end of 1800, looking for a quiet and picturesque retreat where he could train his genius. Those years were characterized by a creative impulse that moved the whole Tuscan area: Florence, Livorno, Lucca, were in close touch with the most important European capitals. Ideas and people moved around easily, artists and musicians met in private houses and cafes. But to go back to the roots of inspiration, to the purest lights and atmosphere, they went back to nature.
Puccini had 2 great passions: music and hunt, and for him the Massaciuccoli lake was the perfect place to raise them both. He went there first in 1891, 33 years old, and decided to move there renting a room. Then came the successful operas Manon Lescaut (1893) and Boheme (1896), and with the money he had earned he bought the house of his life, an ancient watchtower, that he got completely restored. He also buried part of the lake shore, in order to build a street and a garden in front of the house, where the pier is, the starting point for his hunting . The house is still open to public, and tells all these stories: the piano, memories of great operas and international success, pictures of his friend the painter Ferruccio Pagni, who was part of a group of friends like Plinio Nomellini and the Tommasi Brothers. Puccini lived in Torre del Lago for 30 years, and here he composed many of his most famous operas, like Tosca (1900), Madam Butterfly ( 1904), La fanciulla del west (1910), La Rondine (1917) and Il Trittico (1918).
